Beagle diagnosed with Cushings Disease

Dog is 8 yrs old and has been diagnosed with Cushings Disease. He is a beagle. What treatment is recommended? Thank you.

We usually start treatment with Anipryl. If after 4 to 8 weeks there is no response (as measured by repeated lab tests) we add ketoconazole. We start with these treatments because there are less serious side effects with these treatments.

If this treatment is unsuccessful we will use Lysodren. Be sure to go over the risks of both treatment and uncontrolled Cushings Disease with your veterinarian. The most serious problem in early treatment is sudden collapse associated with the sudden drop of internal cortisol levels, so careful monitoring will be required.
