Should a cat be declawed

I have a friend that recently moved into a brand new home. Her cat has started to use her white banister as a scratching post. She has put out a few scratching posts, but he is not interested in them. She also cuts his nails. She is considering declawing him! Told her that that is barbaric and to try other means like nail caps, double sided tape or Feliway or if this fails rehoming him. He is a very cool cat by the way! What are your thoughts on declawing?

We do not condone declawing cats! All of the alternatives you mention are preferable to declawing.
