My 10 year old cat hates for her back to be touched. Lately she has started to bite and lick the area. She has flakes of shin in her hair near her tail. Could it just be dry skin or an allergy?

I rescued a five year old cat that will not eat canned food at all. I’m concerned whether or not she is getting enough nutrients in her dry food. Should I be giving her some additional supplements?

I have been using clay litter to prevent the dust of ordinary litter from aggravating the problem. I heard DELTA Rescue uses a specific type of ground up newspaper litter. What is it called and where can I buy it?

I have 2 questions. Do you know of any problem with the manufacture etc. of isoflourane or other anesthesia? My dog is scheduled for minor surgery and I am concerned. Two animals were lost on the table at my vets in the last few months due to reaction to anesthesia. Do you have any recommendations concerning a friends 3 year old collie that was adopted recently and spayed 7 days ago. She whined for 4 days after the surgery, is not active or interactive as she was, and seems depressed. To make matters worse, she has hardly eaten since the spay.

We have an indoor cat, about 15 years old who started yowling or what sounds like very loud yelling when my husband leaves the room she is in, it is so loud she wakes us up at night, even with the door shut. My question is what can we do about it? How do you get a cat to behave or to stop yelling? If we yell at her she just gets louder and if we ignore her she gets louder. She is diabetic under control and otherwise good health. Thanks for any input.

To Whom It May Concern: My dog (black lab) has been scratching furiously for the past 4 months. My Vet has informed me that this may be an alergy. I have been prescribed different medications for her and nothing seems to help. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your assistance.

I just sent in a question...this one is about the same kitty. When he had his one year old check up at the vet she listened carefully to his heart and then said that he had a murmur. She even gave it a "class", and recommended an ultrasound. I did have the ultrasound done and she did not find any problem. Do you think I should investigate more. Or could he have just been soooo excited at the visit that it presented as a murmur?

Two vets confirmed pemphigus complex in my large otherwise very very active 12 year old female royal std poodle of 65 Pounds. She takes long walks and eats great! Also has fresh rotisserie sams chicken, broccoli, and cauliflower in her diet. Plus nutro ultra. Prednisone 10 mg 2x day, milk thistle 175 mg 2x day, synoviG4, And doxycycline 100 mg 2x day Help Maintain, but do not cure, the problem mainly with bulbous nose and red-pink gums. She has great gums, teeth with brushing and zymox gel otherwise, no swelling, absessed teeth.. Azathioprine 50 mg 1x day worked great but significantly raised her liver values. Should we try chlorambucil (cyclosporin)?

Thanks,

Stephen gran Palatine, il

Doc, I have a 14yr old Bluetip Himalayan neutered male, who I believe has allergies. He had been on Royal Canin SO due to urine crystals, but he started getting itchy, mini pustules at the base of his tail for the last 6 six years or so. I had given him Depo shots to alleviate his symptoms over the years but now we are on a Hydrolized Protein (Royal Canin) diet. He has been on this strict diet for about three weeks now and is not getting any better (sniffling, hair loss, pustules, scratching). I changed the litter to a dust free type, exhausted all environmental allergens I could think of. I am concerned with the pustules on the base of his tail. Have you had experience with these?

Thanks

At times her eyes seem unfocused and cloudy. She sleeps alot now but is always happy when I''m with her and still eats very well. Is there anything I can do for her sight that is non-invasive? Should I take her to the vet or should I accept that she is just really old?

I have an 8 year old German shephard mix. My dog has recently developed a condition whereby mucous forms on the lower part of the eye. The condition has been present for at least a week despite my daily washing of the area with warm water and a washcloth. My dog seems otherwise healthy. It was suggested by the veterinarian that my dog has dry eyes (2% and 5% of normal tear production) and will require lifelong medication in the form of daily topical application of cyclosporing and artificial tears. Is there no curative treatment?

I make enough meatloaf to last 2months and freeze it. She loves it! Chicken, rice, lean beef or buffalo, carrots peas and sweet potatoes, mashed garbanzo beans, chia, blue berry, cranberry, and peas and fish oil. She has firm stool and gobbles it up. She's a mini labradoodle and she gets 1 &1\2 to 1 1\3 cups a day. Is she missing anything? She just won't eat commercial food.

Dear Dr. Brown, I have two dogs...a 4 year old golden retriever/chow mix and a 1 1/2 year old golden retriever. They are both grass eaters. Is this something that I should be concerned about? They are fed morning and night with Nutro Max Large Breed Adult dog food so I know it is not because they are hungry. What is going on? your opinion will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Dr. Brown, I was reading the story on Ivy living with Kidney Disease for years and I was wondering what you did to keep him going. Minnew, my 14 year old, was diagnosed about 7 months ago. She gets fluids twice a week and we are keeping her thyroid high enough to keep her kidneys happy. She is also on Royal Canin RX food (and Solid Gold wet depending on her mood). She has her good and bad days. More good than bad. Any advice?

Many products, such as Parastar, Frontline, and Vectra, seem to work well for a few months, and then become ineffective. I'm having some initial success with Wondercide, a natural cedar oil-based product, for cats and dogs. Any information is appreciated.

I have a 6yr. old minature pincher. He is shedding alot and I am giving him a liquid Omega 3&6 fatty acids liquid solution that I put on his dog food once a day. This solution was supposed to help his shedding problem but I haven''t seen any difference in the one month period that he has been getting it. Is there something else I can give him or will he just continue to shed like crazy? Does this breed of dog shed this badly? Thanks for your help.

How do/can you keep track of all your animals for needed flea control, rabies, distemper, etc medications? Do you microchip them? My little Merlon Cocker Spaniel (10 years old) had skin cancer and it spread so quickly we had to euthanize him (July 2018) before it spread to his bones, which would have really caused him a lot of needless pain. What do you do in that sort of situation? Do you administer expensive chemotherapy with no assurance of any amelioration of it's condition, or do you euthanize it, knowing a cure is hopeless?

My poor old cat was introduced to fleas for the first time. Vet applied Frontline in office visit. She chewed or scratched all the hair off the spot where it was placed. She was scratching all over also and her hair stood up all over her body. Had a cortisone shot. Helped for awhile. Then the fleas were back. Tried a Seresto flea collar. She was also scratching at the collar all the time. Fleas finally eliminated from the home. Her hair is till standing up and she is still biting the middle of her back months later. I bought 2 of the collars for both cats at $60 apiece. This got the fleas finally. She is a Russian Blue breed. A cat of the same breed lived 23 years with us and also had this allergy. What can I do to make her more comfortable without cortisone injections?

I've taken my 11 yr old Schnauzer mix to my vet regarding a deep lung sounding cough. After tests he saw a heart valve problem and a very thin trachea. "Shotz" is on 5.3 mg enalapril 2x daily, theophylline 100 mg 2x daily, and temeril-p 2mg 1x daily. The copd sounding cough is getting worse and constant and it looks like he struggles to breathe. Is euthanasia my next choice? He has a strong will to live. Thanks

My neutered male dog of older indeterminate age has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure which apparently grew out of an earlier heart murmur. He’s on Vetmedin, potassium and several diuretics. We’ve heard favorable things about Hawthorne berries as a possible help for him but his cardiologist doesn’t know what dose or whether it would interact with current medications. He’s about 22 lbs. Are you familiar with this product and what amount would be considered a proper dose? Would there be an interaction with the Vetmedin?

How do you treat cancer of the eye in a mixed breed dog? Got room for one more? This is one of the most loving and most beautiful dogs I have ever seen. He was rescued from a crack house. Enjoys people and other dogs. Living with a senior who can no longer provide for him.

My wonderful 8 year old dog became lethargic and was wheezing. To our shock, he was in congestive heart failure. He was diagnosed with cardio myopathy. The immediate crisis has passed for now but the key is to get his fractional contractions higher (I was told 35% is normal, he is hovering around 15%). The problem is, when we put him on digoxin, his numbers went up but he refused to eat--- for a week! We took him off digoxin and he began eating his numbers dropped from 18-14%. We've started him on digoxin again but I'm afraid he'll stop eating. Sometimes the only thing that he'll eat is a small can of cat food. Is it harmful to give a dog (and he''s a big dog) cat food... or is better to get something in his stomach rather than nothing at all? I'm so worried that in trying to help him, I may be harming him.

My cat had 5 upper teeth pulled in April 2019. Bumps in upper gum only area. Bio was done came back Neg for anything. Gums were fine for awhile but are now inflamed and has trouble eating. She is on 0.1ml Gabapentin oral and Mirtazapine 15mg (1/3 pill every other day for appetite.

Do you know of any supplement or treatment for her? Everyone tells me to pull all the teeth because that is the only way to help her. I want to of course make the best decision for her. I would love to know you opinion on this.
