8 year old dog – can she be in heat?

We adopted her from the local Animal Welfare Rescue site. Their vet nor our own vet could not decide if she had been spaded or not. Her stomach is loose and flexible and would “hide” any scaring. She is now passing a little blood for the last 2 days.

An 8 year old could still have heat cycles. Passing some blood is a sign of heat. It should also be coupled with a swelling of the vulva. A check by your regular veterinarian now should confirm if this is a heat cycle. If still in doubt there is a blood test to confirm if a dog still has ovaries. It is run by our ANTECH laboratory.
