Dog has a torn ACL

My vet thinks my dog has a torn ACL and may have also damaged her menuscus. I am seeing the surgeon soon. What are your feelings on doing the surgery? I had another dog years ago that had this surgery. The rehabilitation was very tough on both of us. This dog is even more active. I’m afraid the recovery will do more damage to her mentally and also physically then the injury.

We have great success with this surgery at the sanctuary. We use confinement to large cages and sedatives as needed for the initial recovery. We do have an extensive physical therapy department to aid in the rehabilitation of these surgery cases. Many private practices are utilizing physical therapy as well. You need to check around for the availability in your area. The use of extra large airline crates with leash walking in the home environment can be helpful during the initial recovery period. We definitely believe the effort is worth the benefit!
