I have a friend that recently moved into a brand new home. Her cat has started to use her white banister as a scratching post. She has put out a few scratching posts, but he is not interested in them. She also cuts his nails. She is considering declawing him! Told her that that is barbaric and to try other means like nail caps, double sided tape or Feliway or if this fails rehoming him. He is a very cool cat by the way! What are your thoughts on declawing?

Doctor, My l3 year old Shepherd-Vizsla mix, 75 lbs, had a calcium reading of 13, scale of 11 high normal, in 2014. Today, she has a calcium reading of 16. What could be the cause of this, and what can be done about it? Thank you.

We came home on Friday at 5:00 PM to discover our 8 month old kitten in full respiratory distress. We believe his crisis started with him losing control of his bowels in the hallway, then crawling, unable to catch his breath and panting to the downstairs bathroom cabinet under the sink, where we found him. Upon picking him up, he screamed and yowled all the way to the car. We rushed him to emergency vet where he was excreting foam and blood from the mouth. He was immediately treated with pure oxygen and lasiks, later, chest x-rays were obtained and full blood panel. His lungs were full of fluid. Blood work was mostly positive -- kidneys and liver good. Hematocrit elevated (I believe -- not enough oxygen circulating in the blood.) and his blood sugar was almost triple. Later, he was tested for FIV, FELP heartworm. Only heartworm was positive. He was discharged home to us the following day after one large dose of antibiotic and prednisolone. We have an appointment to follow-up with his vet tomorrow. My concern, of course, is recurrence when the worms die off. There are only a handful of alternative treatments mentioned for cats online and I know in the wrong dosage, wormwood (for example) can be toxic. I'm interested in knowing your thoughts or experience with food grade diatomaceous earth and/or pumpkin seed oil? Thank you!

Is there anything that can reduce bleeding. was infected with disturbing odor. The antibiotics worked.

I have an 8 year old British bulldog who about a year ago jumped off my bed and hurt her front shoulder. She's been to the vet many times and had anti inflammitories and will be ok for a few weeks then start limping again. They we're going to xray as a last resort as I'm on disability and just have no money. I myself have been bed ridden for 12 years with a nerve disease crps and unable to walk. Recently I started on cannabis oil and my pain is almost gone and I'm walking So I'm wondering if I can give her a drop and how often if I can?

My cat is 15 and has kidney disease. I have him on a perscription diet, sub fluids, BP meds and azodyl. The initial bloodwork he had BUN level at 92 and CREA at 5.5 which is apparently quite high. After doing the treatments for a few months the levels have not changed. I was previously told if the levels didn't lower it would only be a matter of time and not much more could be done. He now apparently has a slight heart murmur, a bladder stone and lost 1lb from 6lb to 5lb. My vet suggested he go to a cardiologist to check on his heart and get surgery for the bladder stone removal. I'm wondering if I should proceed with the surgery? I know he is sick and his situation is incurable and based on all the information it seems like it wouldn't prolong his life much more.

My son's Boston Terrier was fine during the winter, but the moment the grass started growing (might be Bermuda grass) the dog is red on his paws, muzzle and belly. What do you recommend for this? I know replanting the yard would be great, but not sure if he can afford to do that at this time.

Thank you Dr. Gaylord for your Quick and helpful response. Your answer amazes me. So the niacin( vitamin B3) must be extraordinary for inflammation and I find it most intriguing the hemorrhoid cream would work as well as it does help to shrink inflamed blood vessels. And I will definitely use the bullfrog sunscreen. You didn't mention the prednisone she is on do you think the niacin might be better. Jenny is a 65 pound Australian shepherd mix the fourth of four of our adopted shelter dogs. We have been a supporter of Delta Rescue for many years and agree most affirmatively with Leo Grillo's care for life animal sanctuary. Bless your efforts and kind care always!

Our Jenny has been diagnosed with canine lupus which affects her nose. She is on 5ml prednisone every day except for winter when the dose is reduced to 5ml every other day. Her nose is healing nicely with no side effects from the prednisone except for the tip which is still pink. We keep her out of the sun and apply a holistic caster oil (Edgar Cayce)to tip of her nose to keep it from cracking and bleeding. Jenny seems to be responding quite well to both as a higher dose of prednisone did not agree well for her in the past. Can you advise further if there is any other information that may help such as a safe sun screen perhaps. Thank you so very much for your time and advice. Sincerely, Susan Henry

My 10 year old Siamese had targeted radiation @ Univ of FL Sm Animal Hosp for her nasal lymphoma last fall. Repeat cat scans have shown no recurrence. We did only one chemo tx because at the time I thought it had made her sick AND I understood the incidence of metastasis to be 10-15%. Now,however, her 3 mo follow up showed 2 small masses, one in each lung, so she will need to resume chemo asap. I'm wondering if Frankincense & Cedarwood might help her.

Then as the scales come off so does the hair. Can I apply hemp oil on these spots to help heal them? I'm wondering if it is eczema in dogs that is causing this. He sheds unmercifully but is active and eats his food. He has stopped taking walks..absolutely refuses to go. We have a lot of stress in our house this past month as my husband developed cancer and then had a stroke. We have a lot of dr. appointments and treatments to go to so Dudley is home a lone more often. However, he did have these spots before but not this bad

I have a 22 year old cat that often spends a lot of time in the litter box, mostly sleeping. This is a relatively new occurrence. Additionally, she often does not make it to the litter box, and seems not to care that she doesn't, and will just urinate where she stands. I believe that her time is near but am not sure how or when to make that decision for her. She doesn't do anything except eat, sleep and use that litter box. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have play time at least three times per day, but she will follow me and attack me when I'm on the computer, cell phone etc. Bites my arms and legs sometimes bringing blood.

I have seven cats, a big house what all kind of cat toys, they're happy as can be period and well taken care of. Bandit is the cat that does not want to be around any other cats. I've watched her confined herself. When they walk by her. She will SWAT at them. I know she's an inbred cat. I adopted her when I moved into my former house. She was abandoned outside it was in the country and she loves to be outside. Summertime she would stay outside all the time. Winter time she wouldn't care about going outside always used the litter box sure. Which I do have 5 of them, sifter boxes. And I used scoop away period which has no odor and I keep very clean. But her and Puma my other female just do not like each other. At all. I've had Bandit for over 6 years Puma for 7 and I just don't know what to do I want them to be happy. And I can't find it in myself to get rid of Bandit. Bandit is smart. She gets in her little spot and when she sweats out she gets Puma on the face all the time. You would think Puma would have learned your lesson period but she doesn't her poor little nose gets scratched on the back of her neck get scratch done interface get scratch time and she's a beautiful kitty. And so is my little Bandit. They're both little kitties under 9 pounds. My vet suggested Prozac I think I have to look back at the text she sent me. Now friend of mine has a farm I could put her at back yet or should be a barn Cat by herself. I just don't know what to do. She will be taken care of at the farm 2. My vet also suggested she find her a home that she will be by herself with the owners. Maybe that's what I should do period I just hate move her.

Hello dr. I'm having issues with bad allergies in my female English bulldog. She is three years old and 70 pounds. Trying to find a good allergy medication to give her. I used Benadryl for awhile and that's no longer working. Her ears and around her eyes look brown all the time and her eyes water nonstop. I'm currently using best vest but it's not helping. He Needs hemp oil to stimulate appetite. Where can I get this? I have been taking him to reg and holistic vets and the holistic vet gives him Hemp RX oil but I have to take him each time and it is expensive just to get the oil. The cyproheptadine from the reg vet makes him very anxious, 1/4 pill, so I stopped it. He does take theophyline for asthma. I rather give him the oil. Can I buy a trustworthy one from the internet?

Both of us would like to know what makes her do that if it could be a sign of a illness we don't know about? I worry if we wait to long she will die just like my French Mastiff did on Monday when I contacted you. Please let us know.

She was throwing up about 3 weeks ago I thought the dry dog food I had just bought her may have set in a warehouse to long before it got to the store to be sold. So I stop feeding it to her. She was 9yr and 7 mos old.She weight 125. I cooked her rice, chicken, hamburger, gave her mixed veg. carrots, peas, green beans, she was doing so good. I took her out to go to the bathroom every two hrs and she did good. She ate wieners and frys with me for lunch and at 3:30pm she ate 2 slices of bread and a treat. At 6:00pm I got up to take her out side and she had pooped in my livingroom and she in all the years I've had her never went inside the house. I called her and she could hardly get out of her bed went to take her out side and she was a little shaky, when I got her back in the house she just laid down right by the door and was panting I thought she just need to rest for a minute. But every time I started to walk off she would make a sound like she didn't want me to leave. That went on for 30 minutes. Then she went to get in her bed again but she turned backward. I went into the kitchen and all of a sudden I heard the worse cry out and I ran in there and blood was coming from her mouth and her butt. Then I ran to the kitchen to get something to wrap up the blood and when I got back she was turn around front was. Every time I started to leave she would make a sound again like she didn't want me too and I petted her and I new she was going to die and I told her to go on I loved her and withnin 10 minutes she was gone. I just want to understand what happen. She was a couple of months ago had real problems with her Kidney's. Vet had her on Antibiotics and Predisone. But that seem to clear up.The only other thing she had about 6 months ago Hookworms and allergy's. But she was given meds for that also. Please help me under what this could be. Was there anything I could have done. I love and miss her so much. I just want to understand.

Doctor won't see her till next weekend. Meanwhile, her scores rise: ALT >1000, AST 212, and ALKP 1609. Ultrasound showed no tumors but adrenal gland on one side enlarged. Is it safe to let this go another week until they do more tests? The doctor thinks it's hormonal. Best food? Omega-3 okay? (I got some hemp seed oil for her and I have some flax seed, too).

About six months ago, I adopted two dogs from the pound. They get along very well. They play together all the time. They share a food bowl without incident. They share toys very well. About a month ago, my beagle was sitting on my lap. My black lab walked up to the chair and the beagle started growling. The lab attacked. They were fighting and growling and barking. I pulled them apart and kept them separated. Ten minutes later, I let them get together and they acted like nothing happened. This has happened about a dozen times. I don't know what to do. I give them both tons of attention. I'm afraid they're going to get hurt or that I will. Can you give me some advice?

Our vet has been working a fur problem with our neutered Australian mail for a year now. Baxter started out with a urine infection a year ago which was misdiagnosed by our former vet. He was treated and eventually diagnosed with a prostate problem (being treated with finasteride). Now he is losing fur and his estrogen level is 150 and should be 25. Small skin eruptions which have biopsied but nothing identified. Being treated with melatonin as researched by our vet. Do you have any other suggestions we could investigate?
