Cat is urinating in inappropriate places.

One of my 3 cats is urinating in inappropriate places. The vet diagnosed cystitis (after he found blood in his urine)and the cat is on a regimen of amoxilin and methagel for 3 weeks. My boyfriend has insisted that the cats be shut in one room of our house for the past 3 years so they don’t get fur around and damage the furniture, etc. Recently he has relented and has let them be out 4 hours a day at night while they are “supervised”. The vet said the stress of being confined could have caused this cat to have this problem. Because of these conditions I plan to move out next week and take my cats with me! But now I worry that the stress of the move may not make the situation any better. How can I get this cat back to using the litter box?

Feline urological syndrome can be stress induced, but the cat has to have an individual predilection for the disorder. the stress of moving will pass after a short time, the ongoing stress of the current living conditions will remain. First, treat the cat medically as you have already started. Second, there are cat box additives that you can add to litter to attract the cat back to the box. Check with your local pet stores and veterinarian for these products. It should help to get your cat back to the box. Also, when the medical conditions clears with medication the cat often goes back to the box on his own. They urinate inappropriately because their bladder burns and they have such a urinary urgency they can”t make it back to the box!
