My dog has dry and itchy skin. My veterinarian has prescribed a special food by Hill’s because he thinks it”s a food allergy. He also put him on a steroid for the itching. What do you think?

Dry and itchy skin can often be helped with special attention to diet regardless if it is a primary food allergy. At the shelter we use a food of our own design using millet, brown rice, and barley and a unique protein source, bison. It is important to have fatty acids to give moisture to the coat.

To find out if the diet alone will help avoid steroids for the first thirty days. If there are sores from the itching use an antibiotic to get those under control. Hills may not be the best choice for the food. Our food is not yet on the market; however, other wheat or potato based, unique protein foods are available through pet stores.

A good sulfur based shampoo done once or twice weekly can also give relief to the itching while giving the diet time to take effect.
