Dog neurotic, skiddish and jumpy

We have had our 4 yr old dog since she’s a puppy (absolutely NO history of abuse), but she is so neurotic, skiddish and jumpy. Sometimes she stares out into space for long periods of time and other times barks at things that aren’t there. We have two other dogs and we all joke that she’s the nutty or crazy one. But I feel bad for her. Is there a medical or mental problem that might be causing this behavior that could be corrected with medicine that would help her to relax? Thanks

You do not mention if this pet is a purebred or a mixed breed dog. Unfortunately, in purebred dogs there is so much inbreeding we sometimes do have mental problems. Less frequently the mixed breeds can have mental issues. first, an animal communicator may be able to determine if this is an emotional problem versus a true mental illness. Email us your location and we will try to find one in your area. There are medications which may be able to help your pet. At the shelter we have successfully used amitriptyline and Prozac for animals with emotional or mental problems. Both should be readily available through your veterinarian.
