I have a 12yr. old cat that has developed an allergy

The vet has given her two shots now of a steroid.. they only last a month and I can’t afford the high fee or to have her tested. I was wondering if I could give her an antihisimine for her allergy. She has got scabs on her head/neck from scratching.. No front claws when I got her otherwise she probably would have her whole body scabby.

Chlorpheniramine can be safely given to cats at a dose of up to 2 mg. twice per day. This is a product that can be found over the counter. It usually comes as a 4 mg. tablet, so the usual dose is 1/2 tablet up to twice daily. It is not as effective as the steroid injections. You need to make sure there is not a flea problem. Cats may become allergic to flea bites and then even one bite will drive them crazy. In addition change to a hypo-allergenic food, something with a unique protein source and no gluten.
