lyme vaccination

I live in the Northeast. My vet has recommended giving my 2 year old Amstaff the lyme vaccination. We do get ticks in our area, but I am concerned about subjecting her to more. Do you know how safe these vaccines are?

The Lyme’s vaccine has been used safely for a number of years now. However, your concern regarding over vaccinating are valid. Current research indicates we are probably vaccinating too often and with too many antigens at one time. You and your veterinarian must assess your dog’s true risk to Lyme’s Disease exposure. If you both believe the risk is real, administer the vaccine alone, not at the same time you have other vaccines administered.
