My four year old nuetered male Siamese has a scarred left ventricle and enlarged left atrium. The cardiologist put him on Lasix and Elanapril. She told me that he may live another year or two. Is this combination fairly typical in these cases? Thanks

My sister has a Yorkie she wanted me to ask about Midget, she is 10yrs old and weights 12 pounds, every time she takes a drink of water or gets excited she starts coughing like she can't get her breathe. Both of us would like to know what makes her do that if it could be a sign of a illness we don't know about? I worry if we wait to long she will die just like my French Mastiff did on Monday when I contacted you. Please let us know.

He had approx 5 teeth removed with laser. Recently he will not let you touch the outside bottom of his jaw. I was able to get a finger in his mouth to feel around and I felt a sharp either bone or tooth. Could this have been missed during his oral surgery and causing him the discomfort? I've also had to change his dog food due to allergies; scratching biting paws and tail, dry scaly skin. He was on Pro Plan Bright Mind Adult 7+ Chicken for about 8 months. Did show great mental response to it, but still had allergy issues. Recently started him on Blue Basics Grain-free Salmon & Potato mixed with couple teaspoons canned same formula & Licks anti-inflammatory. Seems to be doing well with it as far as allergy issues. Had couple loose stools. Think might be due to canned food. He was very restless last night and I think it's due to the mouth issue. Hope all this info helps you with you expertise advise. Thank you. My cat has been experiencing what sounds like muscus in his chest. He does not have running eyes or nose. His vet gives him a Convenia shot and it clears up. However, in about two months or so it comes back. His vet thinks it might be asthma but to me he doesn't have the symptoms. Do you have a suggestion of what it might be?

I have an 11 year old male, neutered kitty (one of 10 rescues I have) that started sneezing 2-3 days ago and his right eye periodically looks weepy. He is, as they all are, an indoor kitty. He is eating, not a lot, but I am worried. Since I am retired and on a fixed income I can’t run to the vet with any little thing like I used to when working. But if you think I should, I will. Thank you Dr. Brown.

Dear Dr. Brown, I have multiple cats. One of them, Indie, has a bad habit of spray and constantly yowling. In the beginning, we thought it was UTI that cause him spraying, we took him to the vet, after 2 shots, flush and medication, he’s still doing the same thing. My next guess was, his neuter surgery wasn’t completed. I took him to the vet who did his surgery and a second opinion. Both vets said the surgery was perfect. I have used almost every brand of stain / odor spray; vinegar, as some blogs suggested; aluminum foil covered the kitchen counters, walls….., None of them work.

I googled the possible reasons for his behaviours, it indicated stress might be one of the reasons because of multi cats in the same house. So, I bought him Comfort Zone Feliway’s collar to calm him and a bottle of spray, of the same brand, to prevent urine marking. He is still spraying everywhere, yowling all the time.

He loves to go out, I let him out, thinking it might solve the problem for both of us. Then, he got into a fight and came back with a deep wound. I stop letting him out, his spraying and yowling behaviours are getting worse.

I am running out of ideas. Dr. Brown, you have over 300 cats under the same roof. Do you encounter any cats having the similar behaviours? How do you handle it?

Please help. Thank you!!!

He also has swelling on his legs and paws. His abdomen, legs, and paws are tender to the touch. He has seen two vets and had blood work, an ultrasound of his abdomen, and biopsy of his kidneys. He is also on Doxycycline and Lysics. The only thing revealed in all of the tests was a compete lack of Protein and dry FIP. Neither of the two Vets that came “highly” recommended know what to do. His primary Vet says he is having sleepless nights trying to figure this out. We’ve spent over $500 so far and we don’t have much more to spend. This website was recommended and I hope you might have a suggestion or an answer. I really don’t want to put him down since I don’t know if this is fatal or not. Can you please help?

She seems to be over initial shock and panic, but some time after she seems to have had a stroke or something that resulted in her head being permanently tilted to the right. She had cataracts so we know this is probably the source of complete blindness.

She only settles if placed in a crate otherwise she is constantly walking around. A walk does not solve this. She urines what seems every 30mins and sometimes less in the house. She cant seem to tell us when she needs to go out. She has also left stools in the house. Her appetite is still good.

He is in good health. When he licks he also starts to pull out his hair. Vets have checked his skin etc. Our vet says that he just might have a habit like we have biting our nails. Find clumps of hair at times around the house. Just doesnt seem normal. Thank you

My 11 year old Lab has an elongated soft palate which the vet advises would be difficult to operate on due to bleeding. He is fit and well otherwise, but the coughing and choking is very distressing for him and us. Would a specialist surgeon be likely to consider this operation as a possibility?

Ozzie ia about five years old. He's a shepherd/setter mix about 83 pounds. He belongs to a friend but spent six months at my house after being subjected to a very small crate 24 hours a day, too small to stretch out in. (Divorce thing). He is house broken and is a house dog. The divorce is over and he is back with his owner in the house where he was held "captive" by "her." Whenever he gets into the basement he poops. He also urinates on beds and futons. His hours are not consistent because his owner has different hours. His work is an hour away. His grandmother is going down every day to let him out and get rid of "evidence." He does not poop upstairs. Any idea what is really going on and how to stop it? Thanks so much.

My dog was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 oral melanoma. She is currently taking tramadol to control pain, and frankincense is being used to help fight the cancer, but I have seen literature contraindicating the use of both concurrently in humans. Do you have any insight regarding the use of both in dogs? We are currently without many treatment options given her stage, and are focusing on management and keeping her as comfortable and healthy for as long as possible.

We adopted her from the local Animal Welfare Rescue site. Their vet nor our own vet could not decide if she had been spaded or not. Her stomach is loose and flexible and would "hide" any scaring. She is now passing a little blood for the last 2 days.

My cat is 15 and has kidney disease. I have him on a perscription diet, sub fluids, BP meds and azodyl. The initial bloodwork he had BUN level at 92 and CREA at 5.5 which is apparently quite high. After doing the treatments for a few months the levels have not changed. I was previously told if the levels didn't lower it would only be a matter of time and not much more could be done. He now apparently has a slight heart murmur, a bladder stone and lost 1lb from 6lb to 5lb. My vet suggested he go to a cardiologist to check on his heart and get surgery for the bladder stone removal. I'm wondering if I should proceed with the surgery? I know he is sick and his situation is incurable and based on all the information it seems like it wouldn't prolong his life much more.

Max and Sammy were adopted about eight years ago, Max first and Sammy about two months later. Everything was fine. Prince was adopted about five years ago and at first, everyone got along. About a year later, Prince was sniffing Max's genital region, licking his urine, and trying to hump him. Max was having no parts of that and the two dogs now have their fair share of daily fights. Just recently, Prince began the same thing with Sammy, who has back problems. How can I get Prince to refrain from these activities?

We came home on Friday at 5:00 PM to discover our 8 month old kitten in full respiratory distress. We believe his crisis started with him losing control of his bowels in the hallway, then crawling, unable to catch his breath and panting to the downstairs bathroom cabinet under the sink, where we found him. Upon picking him up, he screamed and yowled all the way to the car. We rushed him to emergency vet where he was excreting foam and blood from the mouth. He was immediately treated with pure oxygen and lasiks, later, chest x-rays were obtained and full blood panel. His lungs were full of fluid. Blood work was mostly positive -- kidneys and liver good. Hematocrit elevated (I believe -- not enough oxygen circulating in the blood.) and his blood sugar was almost triple. Later, he was tested for FIV, FELP heartworm. Only heartworm was positive. He was discharged home to us the following day after one large dose of antibiotic and prednisolone. We have an appointment to follow-up with his vet tomorrow. My concern, of course, is recurrence when the worms die off. There are only a handful of alternative treatments mentioned for cats online and I know in the wrong dosage, wormwood (for example) can be toxic. I'm interested in knowing your thoughts or experience with food grade diatomaceous earth and/or pumpkin seed oil? Thank you!

Leo, I have a 14 year old Chihuahua that has been diagnosed with Cushings Disease. I am familiar with this disease because I lost my a little girl in 2001. She was 14 years old. I don't know what to do with my little Candy, I can't believe I have to see another one of my closest friends suffer the agony of this disease again. The tumor in her stomach is so big she can't stand or walk. Please tell me how I can help her. She is alert and crabby as usual. Because of her age I don't want to put her under sedation for any tests.

About six months ago, I adopted two dogs from the pound. They get along very well. They play together all the time. They share a food bowl without incident. They share toys very well. About a month ago, my beagle was sitting on my lap. My black lab walked up to the chair and the beagle started growling. The lab attacked. They were fighting and growling and barking. I pulled them apart and kept them separated. Ten minutes later, I let them get together and they acted like nothing happened. This has happened about a dozen times. I don't know what to do. I give them both tons of attention. I'm afraid they're going to get hurt or that I will. Can you give me some advice?

Our Jenny has been diagnosed with canine lupus which affects her nose. She is on 5ml prednisone every day except for winter when the dose is reduced to 5ml every other day. Her nose is healing nicely with no side effects from the prednisone except for the tip which is still pink. We keep her out of the sun and apply a holistic caster oil (Edgar Cayce)to tip of her nose to keep it from cracking and bleeding. Jenny seems to be responding quite well to both as a higher dose of prednisone did not agree well for her in the past. Can you advise further if there is any other information that may help such as a safe sun screen perhaps. Thank you so very much for your time and advice. Sincerely, Susan Henry
