How does one become a veterinarian at an animal sanctuary? Is there a certain path to follow? I’m a first year veterinary student and I’m interested in pursing a career in this area of veterinary medicine. Thanks!

My path to being a Sanctuary veterinarian took quite a serendipitous route. Initially, I hoped to be a race track veterinarian, so I concentrated on equine medicine while in Veterinary School. Once graduated I ended up in a busy mixed practice with some equine clients. When I eventually began my own practice, I gravitated more to small animal medicine and surgery. Through this practice I met our Founder and Director, Leo Grillo. From there, I became more interested in care for life medicine.

My point is this, while in school get as broad based education that you possibly can because you never know where life will lead you! During the summers work or volunteer at practices that interest you to expose yourself to as much variety as possible.
