The conventional treatment for allergies in dogs is glucocorticoids. The most common of which is prednisolone. In an attempt to avoid the side effects of steroids there are some alternatives. We have had some success with specific immune therapy developed by Heska, which involves giving injections to block the allergic reaction to specific allergens. Apoquel is a non steroid oral medication that has shown some promise in reducing symptoms of allergies. Cytopoint, also an injectable, is a biological blocking agent with some signs of success. Check with your regular veterinarian for the drug best suited to your dog. A combination of therapies is sometime needed to control symptoms.
